Day 1: Kyoto in Bloom

Experience Kyoto at its most poetic during sakura season, where canal-side pathways, temple gardens, and historic districts are transformed into soft pink landscapes that blend natural beauty with centuries of cultural refinement.

This itinerary requires an early start to manage transit and crowds. Alternatively, you can split the places up over two days.

Morning

Begin your day at Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto’s most famous cherry blossom settings. The expansive wooden stage overlooks a hillside filled with blooming trees, creating sweeping panoramic views of the city framed in pink.

Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at temples, shrines, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting prayer rituals and remain mindful of posted customs.

After exploring the temple, stroll through the preserved streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, where traditional wooden buildings and seasonal sweets add to the spring atmosphere.

Afternoon

Optional add-on: Visit Kodai-ji Temple, with its bamboo groves and cherry trees.

Stroll along the Philosopher's Path, a tranquil stone walkway lined with hundreds of cherry trees tracing a narrow canal. During peak bloom, blossoms arch overhead, scattering petals across the water and path in one of Kyoto’s most iconic spring scenes.

Continue to nearby Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion), where carefully composed gardens and moss landscapes offer a refined contrast to the vibrant sakura outside the temple grounds.

Evening

Optional add-on: Head to Heian Shrine, which is famous for its large garden and weeping cherry trees.

Conclude your day at Maruyama Park, Kyoto’s most famous hanami gathering spot. The park’s large weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura) becomes especially beautiful when illuminated after sunset.

From there, wander into Gion, where lantern-lit streets and preserved machiya townhouses create a magical setting beneath softly glowing blossoms.
