1 Day in Ho Chi Minh City

Day 1: War Stories and Living Culture
Experience multiple facets of Ho Chi Minh City in a single day, moving from wartime landmarks and colonial façades to bustling markets and a contemporary cultural performance.
Morning
Begin at Independence Palace, where preserved meeting rooms, vintage maps, and underground command bunkers offer insight into defining moments of Vietnam’s modern history. Take time to explore the grounds and rooftop helipad.
Continue to the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon for a photo stop. The red-brick façade and twin bell towers remain one of the city’s most recognizable colonial-era landmarks.
Enjoy a café stop inside The Café Apartments, a former residential building now home to eclectic coffee shops and boutiques.
Then stroll along Nguyen Hue Walking Street, exploring the blend of modern, traditional, and trendy stores. Unique cafes and fashion boutiques can be found here, as well as shops with a range of traditional Vietnamese items.
Afternoon
Spend the afternoon at the War Remnants Museum, where photographs, military equipment, and personal accounts provide perspective on the Vietnam War. Use discretion when choosing which exhibits to visit, as some displays may be intense.
Optional add-on: Visit Thien Hau Temple, dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu. Requirements for respectful/modest attire apply at temples, mosques, and other religious sites. Visitors should avoid disrupting religious observances and remain mindful of posted customs.
Evening
Head to Ben Thanh Market, where vendors sell everything from textiles and handicrafts to fresh produce and street snacks. Here you might be able to bargain your way to a good deal on traditional Vietnamese clothing, handicrafts, or art, as well as coffee beans or phin (Vietnamese coffee filters).
Conclude your day at the Saigon Opera House with the AO Show, a dynamic performance that blends acrobatics, bamboo stagecraft, and live music in a contemporary expression of Vietnamese culture.
Alternate Evening Plan
If you'd rather not see the AO Show, wrap up your day with a guided street food tour that starts at Ben Thanh Market to sample southern Vietnamese dishes while learning about the city’s culinary traditions.
Options for Bad Weather
In case of bad weather, visit the:
- Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts to explore Vietnamese art, including sculptures, lacquer paintings, silks, and ancient pieces
- Ho Chi Minh City Museum, where exhibits trace the region’s story from ancient civilizations through colonial and modern eras
- Museum of Vietnamese History to learn about the history of Vietnam from the Bronze Age to the modern era
- Southern Women's Museum to explore the role of Vietnamese women in history, culture, and wartime resistance
- one of the large, high-end shopping complexes in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Saigon Centre or Vincom Center Dong Khoi. In both, you can find fashion, lifestyle items, gourmet coffee, packaged snacks, and teas
Optional Trip Extension
If you are extending your stay in Ho Chi Minh City, take a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an extensive underground network used during the Vietnam War.
