Day 1: Danish Masters and Royal Copenhagen

Discover Copenhagen through its fine art collections, decorative arts traditions, elegant royal architecture, and refined urban design while exploring some of the city’s most important cultural institutions.

Morning

Begin the day at SMK – National Gallery of Denmark where collections span Danish Golden Age paintings, European masters, French art, sculpture, and major modern and contemporary works. The museum’s bright Scandinavian interiors and thoughtfully designed public spaces also reflect Copenhagen’s emphasis on functional modern design.

Optional add-on: Visit The David Collection, a museum known for its collection of Islamic art, European decorative arts, and Danish paintings displayed within an elegant historic townhouse setting.

Afternoon

Continue to Designmuseum Danmark, which explores the global influence of Danish and Scandinavian design through furniture, industrial design, textiles, ceramics, fashion, and decorative arts. One of the most popular exhibits is “The Danish Chair”, which places iconic chairs along a “family tree”.

Afterward, spend time exploring the galleries along Bredgade, a street known for its concentration of contemporary art galleries, antiques dealers, design showrooms, and auction houses.

Evening

Take an evening walk through Frederiksstaden, Copenhagen’s elegant eighteenth-century Rococo district known for broad avenues, symmetry, and royal architecture. Along the walk, admire the exterior of Frederik's Church, commonly called the Marble Church, whose large copper dome dominates the skyline, as well as Amalienborg, the residence complex of the Danish royal family.

Continue toward the waterfront for exterior views of the modern Copenhagen Opera House, one of Copenhagen’s best-known contemporary architectural landmarks, whose modernist design contrasts sharply with the nearby historic district.

Optional add-on: Explore Gammel Strand, an art center focused on modern and contemporary Danish and international art within a historic canal-side setting.

Afterward, visit the Danish Architecture Center within the modern BLOX complex. Exhibits explore Danish urban planning, sustainable architecture, design innovation, and strategies for increasing livability in contemporary urban development.

Spend the evening exploring Kødbyen, the former Meatpacking District, Copenhagen now transformed into one of Copenhagen’s major creative and nightlife hubs. The neighborhood is known for contemporary galleries, experimental art spaces, restaurants, bars, and industrial architecture adapted into cultural venues.
